Dog Shows!

This weekend was the Asheville Kennel club show at the Agricultural center in Fletcher. We have never been to a dog show before( I may have been to Westminster but was too young to remember anything)but dear friends of ours for many years who live in Charlotte were entering their magnificent Great Dane, Henry. They stayed with us (in the Magnolia room) as Henry requires so much space ,so Peter and I, wishing to spend as much time as we could with them, went to the show! Well it was MUCH more fun than I would have thought! The Ag Center(as it is nicknamed around here) is a wonderful, modern air-conditioned facility , it was festooned by fencing creating the rings(I think there were 9)and surrounded by all things dog... including show leads(I really wanted to buy a beaded pink ostrich leather one for Lola) and complete with the yips and barks of all the primped and preened beautiful dogs entered in the show. Henry took the Best in three categories including Best of Breed( I never had any doubt about that)and made it to the end where they were judging Best in Group, but as it was such a long weekend for him he was a little tired and wanted to lay down in the did we, by the way...I think I was most fascinated by the standard poodles, they were really something, some had the really glamorous cuts and there was this silver one that was breath taking, I was really surprised when another dog won best in breed. We enjoyed the Pomeranians, but to my dismay I realized that as adorable as Skyler and Lola are , they are NOT show dogs. They both are too rotund for one thing, and Sky is at least twice as large as all the show dogs...and there I thought for a fleeting minute ,that if the judges saw them ,they would certainly get all the awards as they are so beautiful to me...Alas, they do not meet the standard. I now understand why people do this, as expensive and hard work as it is, but these folks are committed to maintaining the standards of some of the most amazing animals on earth. We watched the Saluki, run like a zephyr and realized that this breed is the one depicted on the walls in ancient Egypt...and you realize that dogs have been our constant companions for centuries...and a life well lived is one that includes the licks and barks and wiggles and cuddles of some of Mans best friends!
